The Salem News
---- — To the editor:
On Dec. 31, my terrier, Pepper, got away from me and ran out onto Tozer Road, where he was hit by a car and badly hurt. Several people stopped to help, thank goodness. Three or four men made a sling out of towels and blankets to put Pepper in the back of my car. Others comforted the woman who was driving the car. She was distraught, and I tried to tell her that she was not to blame. I don’t know if she heard me.
I took Pepper to my vet in Salem, and another woman followed me and had her son ride with me. Another man who was very concerned also followed us to Salem. My vet in Salem immediately sent us to the veterinary hospital in Woburn. The same woman followed us all the way to Woburn, with her son riding with me again. Pepper remained overnight, but in the morning, it became clear that his injuries were just too serious, and we had him put to sleep. I miss him terribly and am gradually crying less and learning to stop looking for him.
As awful as the situation was, the generosity and support of those who stopped helped me to stay focused and not fall apart. I didn’t get any of your names, but you were a blessing, and I will be thankful to you forever.
