Our view: Good news on Bell Market

The Salem News

---- — Fans of downtown Beverly should be cheered by news that Goldberg Properties should soon close on a deal for the former Bell Market property.

Company President Bill Goldberg said the firm hopes to find someone who will use the building, which has been empty since 2009, as a market or restaurant.

That would be a huge boost for that end of Cabot Street. It had to rankle officials across the street in City Hall to see the building vacant and unused (save for a few times when it served as the off-season home of Beverly Farmers Market).

Goldberg Properties has done a fine job with retail developments in Beverly and Salem, and it’s a safe bet they will be able to find the right tenant for the 7,000-square-foot building.

“We’re hometown boys, and we’re optimistic about downtown Beverly,” Goldberg said. “We think this is an important piece of it, and we hope we can find the right tenant to create a win-win-win for us, the tenant and the city.”
