Letter: Best QB list left out Duke St. Pierre

To the editor:

This letter is not intended to be disrespectful to any of the 12 quarterbacks selected by the Salem News sports staff as the best on the North Shore over the past 40 years. Second, I feel embarrassed about writing a letter to the newspaper. However, I feel so strongly about the accomplishments of Danvers quarterback Duke St. Pierre that I felt the need to express myself.

Duke went to Notre Dame on a full football scholarship. He was recruited by several big time college football programs because of his play at quarterback.

College football is big business. High school players are offered scholarships after the college coaches evaluate their play on game film. Duke’s play on film earned him several scholarship offers. Coaches recommendations, newspaper stories, alumni bird-dog reports are received from every school that has a good player. This stuff is secondary. College scholarships are based on performance on game films.

Duke had a great career at Danvers. Notre Dame recruited him as one of the top quarterbacks in the country. He was not selected as one of the top 12 QBs on the North Shore which is inconceivable to me.

If we had 13 quarterbacks in my backyard and we were picking teams, he would be my first choice. He was that good.
