Our view: Building on Tsongas' legacy

Well over a century's worth of historic preservation knowledge and commitment, much of it employed on behalf of this region, was honored this week at the 25th annual Profiles in Preservation awards ceremony in Boston.

Essex National Heritage Commission Executive Director Annie Harris, ENHC trustee Paul McGinley of Ipswich, and Essex National Heritage commissioners Brona Simon and Martin Krugman were among the recipients of the award presented this year in memory of the late U.S. senator Paul Tsongas of Lowell. Other recipients from this area included David Hart and Barbara Cleary, long affiliated with the good works of Historic Salem Inc.; Stanley Smith of Salem, former executive director of Historic Boston Inc.; and Elaine Finbury of Overlook Associates, who was an early investor in residential development in downtown Salem.

The award recognizes both their individual accomplishments and the important role their respective organizations have played in fostering public appreciation of the area's wealth of historic resources.

As congressman and senator, Tsongas blazed a trail for the public-private partnerships that have been so instrumental in preserving the historic fabric of our communities. The work done by these and other recipients honors his great vision.
