Letter: Help many by giving to the United Way

To the editor:

It's that time of year when our mailboxes are filled with the year-end appeals of charitable organizations.

What choices we have! Which causes should I support? Which organizations will invest my gift most effectively? For me, the choice is clear: The North Shore United Way.

My close association with NSUW has shown me that I can make one donation, write just one check, and support dozens of North Shore agencies. I can help North Shore children have enough food to eat at school and at home. I can help teens find an adult mentor who'll help them through troubling times. I can help seniors live meaningful and healthy lives. I can help single parents with quality child care so they can work and gain financial stability. One donation does it all.

I've also seen the criteria by which agencies are evaluated in their applications to NSUW for funding. I know that NSUW does the research that I don't have time for to identify those programs with high rates of success in making true, lasting change in people's lives. I know when NSUW makes the final decisions and selects agencies with which to work, I can trust that my donation is going to make a difference to the agencies, the folks who receive services and my community as a whole.

I give because I can. I volunteer because I care. I invite you to join with me and donate today in whatever amount is right for you.

Help us strengthen families and communities on the North Shore. You can donate online at www.nsuw.org or by calling the NSUW office at 978-922-3966.

Happy holidays!
