Letter: Column contained an error

To the editor:

I am writing in response to Nelson Benton’s “Picking through the pieces of the council votes” column published in The Salem News on Friday, Jan. 11. The column incorrectly states that, as a result of my frustration with last week’s lengthy proceedings over Joan Lovely’s vacant councilor seat, I had announced I would not be seeking re-election this fall. The statement is simply not true: I have made no decisions regarding the 2013 election, nor have I made any announcements.

Since I was elected to the council in November 2011, my focus has been — and will continue to be — on making informed, unbiased decisions to serve the best interests of Salem. I am pleased a compromise was reached regarding the appointment of William Legault to the council. I welcome him onboard and look forward to collaborating with Bill, and the rest of my colleagues this year, as we work through a number of issues critical to Salem’s future.
