After the rush of Thanksgiving and following all the work of preparing for Christmas, it seems that the month of January should be a time to slow down and take life easier. A time to stay in out of the cold. One of the good things about January is that the days start to get lighter, and if we are lucky, we get a few days of the usual January thaw. One of the best things about January is the four Sundays when we can enjoy the Salem Philharmonic Orchestra.
This yearly event of the orchestra’s concerts bring joy to all who attend. The final concert of this past January was wonderful. The performances of the Philharmonic Orchestra itself are very enjoyable, but this particular concert also included the Salem High School Symphony Orchestra. The high school orchestra played several pieces of music and then combined with the Philharmonics. What a wonderful experience for this young orchestra and for those who were listening.
In addition to this, there were two baritone singers who performed pieces from operas and musical plays. This added a great deal to the program.
Last, but certainly not least, was an enjoyable performance by the Paul Madore Choral. They sang a beautiful rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and a salute to the military services.
How fortunate we are to have these wonderful musicians and soloists to entertain us during this cold winter month. The large number of people who attend is a tribute to these talented musicians who help make our lives so pleasant.
