To the editor:
Regarding your Feb. 1 article about traffic on Raymond Road in Salem ("Solving traffic problems on street a work in progress"):
Residents of Raymond Road are understandably frustrated with the volume of traffic flowing on their street.
But I see no mention of the city's interest in facilitating traffic flow.
Raymond Road is important for the flow of city traffic to Marblehead. To further restrict the flow of traffic on that street would simply push those drivers out onto Lafayette Street and Loring Avenue, increasing an already heavy traffic load around the Horace Mann School and Salem State University.
If Raymond Road residents would like to take their street off the city's hands and maintain its infrastructure themselves, the city could be relieved of the burden.
Meanwhile, public roads should serve the public that maintains them.
