To the editor:
Many Winter island wind supporters are pulling the NIMBY card out on the Willows neighborhood. Well, let's see now. These are the things that we live with In My Back Yard or IMBY: Salem power plant; SESD; Willows Park, with its arcade, concerts and general noise and odors; Winter Island Park with the RV traffic, wood smoke and noise; and I can't count how many road races and charity fund walks that block traffic so we can not get to or back to our homes.
Yet with all this we love the place and deal with it. So don't use the NIMBY card here, we live the IMBY every day.
If you think the people that are complaining about wind turbine noise from Falmouth are nuts, ask yourself why are they complaining, what do they have to gain? Peace and quiet.
Don't judge the turbine sounds by a simple half-hour visit. I can stop by the Salem depot between trains and say there is little noise — live it 24/7. Of the 40 or more Willows residents at the meeting, two were in favor. I would venture to guess all would be in favor if dozens of turbines were placed in the harbor.
Please leave the NIMBY card to the rich and famous who don't want their view spoiled. Now add to the fact that a security zone would be placed around the turbine that would extend out hundreds of feet, eliminating any future use of existing building and the ugly gardens what do we gain? A feel-good, state-driven drop in the bucket for "green" energy. By the way, Salem Sound is IMBY and I will support 100 percent placing fields of turbines there.
