The Salem News
---- — To the editor:
Barbara Anderson’s ode to capitalism in Wednesday’s Salem News (“A lesson in capitalism, one cup at a time,” Aug. 21) misses some points.
We learned in college that capitalism is driven by “each individual’s profit-maximizing motive.”
This is also a good definition of selfishness and greed, which are among the seven deadly sins and in business lead to tainted food, unsafe workplaces and corporate fraud.
Government, properly done, is society’s attempt to curb such abuses.
Anderson’s own work insisting on the “properly done” part is admirable.
Also, would Ayn Rand have been so ardent a libertarian had she a child who required public assistance?
