To the editor:
I think I know the history of the recent recreation headquarters building under Doug Bollen until 2006 as well as most people.
I can remember when I was younger and living in Peabody going to the Mack Park town parties and the Mack Park 10-mile road races. And playing softball in the late 1960s at Mack Park when there was no fence, and balls hit to right field often went down to Tremont Street.
We had a team in the North Shore Slow Pitch Softball League consisting of teams from Peabody, Salem and Beverly.
Great memories of those days at Mack Park. Nowadays, the Mack Park softball field is a much better field with a fence.
Also at Mack Park, there used to be ice skating in the winter and sledding on the hill facing Grove Street.
I think the city of Salem could have a police substation at that location, which could serve the North Salem area.
And in years past, probably going back to the Mayor Collins era in the 1950s to the 1970s, Spud Foley was park superintendent who lived in that house at that time, and I think went from Mack Park to the home at Forest River Park in Salem in the Mayor Sam Zoll or Mayor Levesque years.
