Letter: Recovery is real

To the editor:

In some way, each of our lives has been touched by mental health or substance misuse illness. September is National Recovery Month, a time set aside to increase awareness and understanding of these medical disorders. It is a time for all of us to celebrate those members of our community who meet their health issues head on with personal goals of full recovery. It recognizes the contributions and efforts of treatment and service providers, and it sends the message that recovery in all its forms is possible.

The 2013 theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together on Pathways to Wellness,” represents the many ways that people can prevent these behavioral health issues, seek treatment, and sustain recovery as part of a commitment to living a mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy life. This celebration helps get the word out that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people do recover.

This year’s theme highlights that people are not alone on their journey to health. Family, friends, community members and organizations, in fact any one and every one can support individuals throughout the entire recovery process. In fact, right here in Danvers, DanversCARES, a community coalition dedicated to supporting youth and families in making healthy decisions, is a great model of showing that together we can help those in need. The theme also emphasizes that there are many paths to wellness, including professional treatment, medical care, self-help and group support, and that each person embarks on his or her own unique path. But most importantly, it sends the message of hope; it sends the message that recovery is real.
