To the editor:
Your editorial today (Oct. 10), “Government shows its contempt for citizenry,” stands in sharp contrast to Brian Watson’s perceptive column, “Distrust fuels the debt ceiling crisis,” which ran alongside it. He points out that the “ultimatum” tactics of the extreme right are a “threat to whatever is left of orderly governing,” a threat that has me truly concerned about the survival of American democracy. In contrast, your editorial does not look at the deeper causes of the crisis but only fuels contempt for government and politicians in general by dwelling on what are, I agree, unfortunate (but inevitable) consequences of the shutdown. Recovery from this crisis requires deeper insights and analyses by our editors and more respect for government and the political life, not less.
