Letter: Thanks to Beverly Education Foundation

To the editor:

The Beverly Elementary Schools Parent STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Committee wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the Beverly Education Foundation for its efforts toward obtaining one of this year’s “$100K for 100” Cummings Foundation grant awards. The foundation’s funding of more than $25,000 to our kindergarten through grade five schools over the next three years will support programs, volunteer contributions and help promote STEM learning for students and their families.

For the past five years a coordinated effort has been made in the elementary schools to bring STEM enrichment to students through science fairs, family math and science nights, “Pi Day” activities and more. Through the voluntary generosity of parents, teachers, community members, local businesses and Endicott College faculty, donations of time, knowledge and private funds have enabled Beverly’s youngest students to experience science and math both in and outside of the classroom, often with a parent as learning partner. In these programs, time and again we experience the “Wow, I never saw it that way!” and “I get it!” moments that encourage children to expand their science and math knowledge.

STEM enrichment prepares students for the challenges and opportunities in the 21st century economy and improves the impact and effectiveness of our existing education system. Our parent committee thanks the Beverly Education Foundation for recognizing the value of encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and discovery in Beverly students’ lives.
