Focus: Five ways to treat your pets well

By Jonathan Phelps

Everyone likes to be pampered once in a while — even dogs and cats. Here are five ways local businesses can help make your pet look and feel great.

Spa treatment

Grooming is very important for the health and well-being of pets, according to pet experts.

Described as a palace for puppies, DogSpa, in Commodore Plaza in North Beverly, doesn't just groom dogs — it treats them like royalty. This innovative business provides everything from basic grooming to aromatherapy baths and exfoliating treatments.

These treatments make dogs smell and look good for their owners while making the dogs feel great.

"Dogs like to be clean; it makes them act much happier," said Christopher Keohane, the operation manager at DogSpa. "Dogs love coming here; they are always wagging their tails and enjoying the experience."

The same goes for cats.

"We groom cats for the same reason you would groom a dog," said Brad Gaige, the co-owner of Dogs by Design and Cats Too in Beverly. "There is this myth that cats don't like the water, but that's really not true."

Cats are generally clean animals, Gaige said. But it is good to have them groomed regularly.

Dogs by Design and Cats Too offers "a family plan" for pet owners who have both cats and dogs.

Doggie desserts

Just like humans, dogs like a good dessert.

DogSpa offers the finest peanut butter biscotti, doggie cream cones and other doggie desserts, providing your pooch with the perfect treat.

All bakery products are made specifically for the dietary needs of all canines.

Massage therapy

For dogs stressed out or suffering from arthritis, a massage might be just the thing.

Boston Canine Inc. on Route 1 in Peabody offers massage therapy for dogs and massage training for their owners.

Massages are good for dogs "for the same reason they are good for people," said Denise O'Brien, the owner of Boston Canine Inc. "Massages are good for dogs with arthritis, dogs who are athletic and stressed-out dogs. It's also just nice to have a massage."

"Dogs enjoy massages more than you would think," she said. "Oftentimes even more than people because they don't get as embarrassed. They don't have the same insecurities as a human might."

Acupuncture treatments

For dogs suffering from pain or having difficulty moving, Four Paws Acupuncture in Salem can help.

Acupuncture is a clinically effective solution to health problems for pets even in our modern times, according to the business' Web site.

Jeanie Marie Kraft, the owner, is an acupuncturist, herbalist, nutritionist and author.

Accessories

Sometimes a good toy and a little attention is all it takes.

Both the DogSpa and Dogs by Design and Cats Too offer all the essential toys and accessories for your dog or cat to have fun.

Tracy Wilkins of Danvers applies shampoo to Riley, a female Wheaton Terrior, during Riley's visit to DogSpa in Beverly. Wilkins says the most dogs return to the spa frequently, and adjust to being bathed and groomed quickly. Jeanie Marie Kraft, a licensed acupuncurist of Salem, inserts an acupuncture needle on top of Kiki's head, a 14-year-old Newfoundland and lab mix, in her owner's home, Kristine Doll, on Monday afternoon. Kiki suffers from muscle tears in both hind legs, arthritis and Cushings Disease and receives acupuncture and massage treatment from Kraft in her home every Monday. "She's gotten that gleam back in her eyes," smiled Doll, who has noticed a difference in Kiki since she first started the treatments this February. Kristen Olson/Staff photo (Click for larger image)
