A statewide association of human service providers awarded The Salem News a Media Award of Excellence during its 34th annual Convention and Expo in Boston last week.

The award recognized The Salem News for its work to highlight issues important to the families of people living with developmental disabilities.

The paper was nominated by North Shore Arc, a member of the Massachusetts Council of Human Service Providers (Providers' Council).

Hundreds attended the ceremony, during which 10 individuals, the Pine Street Inn, and two businesses were recognized with Awards of Excellence.

Other award recipients included Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo and Sen. Steven Panagiotakos.

The Providers' Council is the largest statewide membership association for community-based organizations providing social, rehabilitation, education and health care services.

Salem News staff writers Stacie N. Galang and Amanda McGregor attended the ceremony, held at the Marriott Copley Place in Boston on Thursday.

Gov. Deval Patrick spoke, as did Secretary of Health and Human Services JudyAnn Bigby.
