"First and foremost, this photo stood out for its color, or lack of color. This is the first time we have received a black-and-white image from a reader, and we like it because it's different. The texture of the old pier piling is sharp when contrasted with the out-of-focus background, which we assume was deliberate. The repetition of the pylons is interesting, and the photo has an overall eerie quality. You can almost smell the salt and feel the sea spray on your face."

From the five, I brought three back for the next round. I have selected one person to offer the job to and will do that soon. Now, I know I need to call the four who did not get the job.
Q: I am going to be at a party on Halloween night and not available to answer my door to trick-or-treaters. What should I be doing?
A: There are a few choices. The easiest is to turn off your outdoor lights to signal that you will not be answering the door. (For safety reasons, you should leave on a light or two in another part of your residence.) If you live in a genteel neighborhood, you may decide to leave your porch light on and put out a bowl of a candy and sign asking trick-or-treaters to only take one. Lastly, you can have a friend or relative who lives in a non-trick-or-treat area to come by and man your door. Have a happy and a safe Halloween!

Q: Although slugs were almost nonexistent this summer, I've had a mini-explosion of pretty little snails. They are about the size of a nickel in diameter, are greenish-gold with black spiral striping, and although I see them in the flower beds, they seem to prefer sticking around rather high up on the house (vinyl) and garage (wood). What are they, and should I be getting rid of them? What do they eat?
