TELL US: What was your commute like in the snow yesterday?
Published: December 14, 2007
Back in town for alumni activitie, couldn't make it to The Garden due to being stuck on 128.
John Wensink, Danvers
Took me 5.5hrs to get from Peabody to Arlington. Normally takes 30 min. 128 was a parking Lot. AWFUL!!
Effie, Arlington
Perfect, like always. I left the Hawthorne at 7pm and was home at 7:03 pm.
Instead of leaving early, all you need to do is wait til all the early birds get done snarling up the roads, and let the snow plows do their jobs.
And there is a big advantage of living just blocks from where you work. More people should try it!
Juli Lederhaus, Salem
My commute from Peabody to Fremont ( NH )which is normally 1 hour and fairly enjoyable, turned into 3 hours of shear panic. Route 95 was covered in snow. I was amazed at the number of cars just zipping along as if there was no snow at all. I made it home, only to get stuck in my driveway, and unable to get into my garage. Ah, this is what we like about a New Hampshire winter - commuter stories.
Patricia Brown, Fremont, NH
I was supposed to be released from the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital (Boston) at 1 p.m., but was released at 2 p.m. to a Fallon Chair Van Ambulance driver who couldn't uinderstand the reason for the 1 hour delay. Well I personally think a hospital that placed me in bed infestered with bed bugs is likely to put you out into the eye of the storm. Although I was with a safe, professional ambulance driver, they (BIDH) told my boy friend Peter that they put me in a cab. It took nearly 8 hours to deliver me back home to Peter, but at least I knew I was safe. Thinking I was in an unknown public cab out of Boston really worried him, especially once Smart Traveller said the roads north of Boston were clear. He worried enough to call the Gloucester Police and only got help from BIDH's Dan the BIDH telephone operator and from the on duty secrity officer of the BIDH who help contact all the Boston cab companies. Needeless to say, I was stuck in a wheel chair between the !
Fenway Park area and the Bunker Hill Bridge ramp for about 6 1/2 hours with the remaining time of about 1 1/2 hours the remainder of the way to Gloucester. It was cold and tiring to me but hell for Peter. After I arrived the BIDH security officer called and we told him I had safely arrived. We then called the Gloucester police to say the same. We're back together now and that's all that counts. We'll deal with BIDH issues later. God Bless.
Donna Mesquita, Gloucester
I drove from the trade port in Portsmouth in just under and hour without any troubles, slow moving but slow. The trouble started when I got into my home town and almost didn't make it to my house. The roadways in Amesbury were horrible.
Lori, Amesbury
Moved to Florida to avoid route 1, 95, and 128 this time of year. Let it snow let it snow let it snow....HAAAAA.
Chuck, Ipswich (2006)
it was horrible, i work in haverhill and it took me over an hour to get home - i got out of work at 2:20.
shauna, Methuen
It took me over 2 hours to get from the Middleton Market Place on Rt 114 to my home in Peabody, also off of Rt 114. I left Middleton at 2:30pm and did not arrive home until 4:45 pm -- usually a 7 minute drive for me!
Kate, Peabody
left Hopkinton at 1:00 got home at 6:00. 1A was covered in fresh snow after dark. Amazing. Plows with blades in the air, no salt or sand.
Guess they were conserving resources.
uneasyRider, Lynn
I took the commuter rail home from Boston getting to the Depot in Beverly at 3:05 - the mile drive to my house on the Wenham line took over an hour!
Jill, Beverly
Left Salem NH at 4:30, home in Andover at 5:30 - let the traffic subside and snowplows work, then set off...
Richard, Andover
Piece of cake. Left work in Boston at 4:00 - walked to North Station, caught the 4:30 train to Salem that got in 5 minutes late. Walked home without a problem. One of the few times lately that Public Transportation has delivered.
Bert Capella, Salem
It took me 2.5 hours to get from Danvers home to Gloucester,,, Not a sander or a plow in sight anywhere.. It was a NIGHTMARE.
Laura, Gloucester
I left my job in Woburn at 2pm.. My usual 30 minute commute from Woburn took me 4.5 hours.. My wipers iced up twice and I had to stop to clear them.. I should have stayed at work until my normal time. Methuen did a great job with the calls from the schools and the kids got home very close to their normal time. Luckily there was an adult to care for them at home..
Rebecca, Methuen
A bit crowded, but the train ran smooth.
Michael, Gloucester
no problem... came up from Boston at 9pm. Steady 35mph the whole way.
Steve, North Andover
i started out with a funeral in the earlier morning followed by a meal and out to a very slippery ride home. Had to be out because of a death of a loved one,,,,but does wonder why anyone as an employer/ etcetera would have others out in these kinda bad conditions especially knowing bad weather like this is coming,,,,,i think its more costly and dangerous to all lives and has no common sense nor care for others to me !
Donna, Amesbury
Horrible!! How ridicoulas how Lawrence Schools were not let out early like everybody else!
I almost got into a car accident after I picked my kids up from school! No consideration for our kids what so ever in lawrence that had to walk home in this kind of weather. Shame on you DR. Laboy!!!
Lucy Carbello, Lawrence
Not bad since I had the day off, but I am scheduled to work this weekend with the next storm. I went shopping and there was hardly anyone in the mall!!
Robin, Hamilton
A 45 min. commute took 3 hrs. One thing that was nerve racking, was that Salem did not let their students out early, now you have children walking in white out conditions with motorists slipping all over..not good.
Kimberly, Salem
In my 20 years of driving I've never experienced anything like it! It took my 3.5 hours to get from Beverly to Main St., Peabody, and then home to Salem. Cars were abandoned on the side road, and a couple were in the middle of the road. The worst came out in people, with drivers going through red lights, and not following normal rules of the road. I was a nervous wreak by the time I finally made it home, thankfully unscathed.
Kristen, Salem
I called sick and didnīt go to work īcause I knew it .
Peter, Beverly
I left Keene, NH at 1:30 got back to haverhill at 6:00 p.m. driving was terrible, windshield wipers stopped working at 495 due to ice build up. Scarry!!!!
Lissa, Haverhill
It was terrible. I left Norton Ma at 12:45PM I did not get into Gloucester until 7:00PM What's worse was although plowed and nicely packed snow as a result Gloucester did not sand hills in the town so I was forced to have me truck towed up Mt Vernon St. This added another 1 hour and 15 minutes to my commute to travel 200 yards.
Patrick McLaughlin, Gloucester
I left work at 12:30pm and arrived home at 5:30pm. The drive in the middle of rush hour during a normal cummute takes about 30 min. Yesterday it took 5 hours. The worse part is that I didn't see a plow on 128 the entire time.
Bob B., Danvers
Terrible!! Merrimack, NH to Andover, MA, over 3 hours. Normally 40 minutes.
Jeff, Andover
3 and one half hours to commute from Burlington to Newburyport. That includes the half an hour I spent stranded in the company's parking lot.
Kate, Newburyport
They should keep us out of school that day because it was snowing hard.
Naomis, Lawrence
My commute was a long 6 hour ordeal from Framingham Ma. The Mass Pike was at a crawl a cars were breaking down all along the way.
Chris, Salem
My commute was fine and only took 1 1/2 hours to get from Salem to West Peabody, the worst was the one solid hour to go from the Salem end of Walnut Street to the Peabody end. I don't know what other people expect to accomplish by tooting their horns and acting crazy---where exactly do they think we can go when we are at a dead stop in the middle of an intersection !
Marilyn Michalak, Peabody
Thankfully I live and work in Gloucester so it only took me 10-15 extra minutes to get home.
Gayle, Gloucester
Not to bad considering. Salem to Gloucester, 1 hr 15 minutes!
Sara Whyte, Gloucester
It took me one and one half hours to go from Childrens Hospital in Waltham on South Street, to the traffic lights by the 99 restaurant. A two minute drive at most!! Cars were not moving in either direction and were clogging the intersection at the lights so no one could move. Fortunately a wonderful man got out of his car and with no coat or boots and took control of the situation. He started directing traffic and getting things moving. Where were the cops?? Thank you so much who ever you are!!
Julie, Waltham
GREAT! I work in Salem and live in Gloucester; when things appeared to be getting bad I put my car in the garage and took the train home with almost no delays.
Greg, Gloucester
It took 55 Minutes to travel 3 1/2 miles from work in North Beverly to Gloucester Crossing ,a 10 minute ride on a normal day.
Tom Smith, Beverly
Took Me 2hrs To Get Home From Work From Danvers.. From 4pm Till 6 Pm Going 15mph The Whole Way Home My Windshield Wiperes Kept On Freezing Up And Pulled Over 4 Times To Brake Up The Ice It Was Probably The Worst Drive Ever! But Everyone Seem To Be Driving Slow So There Wasnt That Many Accidents.
Elena, Gloucester
Brockton to Peabody 7 hours.
Mike, Peabody
It took me 2.5 hours to go from Fresh Pond parkway in Cmabridge to Lexington, then another 2.5 hrs to get to Billerica.
Was not nice at all!!
Kerrie, Lexington
I took me almost two hours to get from Marblehead to Gloucester. I left Marblehead at 2:30 and finally arrived in Gloucester at 4:20. Marblehead was brutal. The streets were unplowed. Salem and Beverly were a lot better. I ran into trouble from Exit 18 to Exit 16 as the plows never hit the Rt. 128 surface. (I think it took 30 minutes to travel three miles.) But road conditions improved at Exit 16 in Manchester until Exit 12 in Gloucester. The rest of my trip home was really slow. The visibility and roads were terrible. I know the cities, towns and state can do nothing for the elements, but the road conditions should have been better. We were playing Russian Roulette with our saftey for sure.
Joseph, Gloucester
I left my office in Danvers @ 3 and did not make it home to Salem until 4:30. One and a half hours to go three miles!!! Ridiculous. 114 was complete gridlock.
Katie St Pierre, Salem
I left work at 2:00pm and it took me 1/2 hr to get from Cherry Hill Office Park to Henry's Market. Then another 1/2 hr to get from Henry's to Rte 62.
My total commute was 2 hrs from Beverly to Peabody, a total of 6.5 miles. Just another day in New England!
Mike, Peabody
I needed to get from North Salem to the Lynn Commons. It took one hour and fifteen minutes each way!
Sue, Salem
Two hours from Lynn to Salem. Left work at 3:00 pm.
Kathleen, Salem
I left my office in Waltham just after 1:00 Thursday, and didn't get home to Hamilton until 5:15. Four hours -- that means I averaged 10 miles an hour down Route 128. Most of the time my wipers were useless because the windshield was all frozen. One thing's for sure: I wasn't the only one!
Diane, Hamilton
I am from Salem and I work in Cambridge right off Mass Ave near MIT. It took me a total of 5 hours and 45 minutes to arrive in Salem. I had left work at 2:00 p.m. and made it around the corner to the Cambridge Galleria mall area at 5:00 p.m. Something that should take 3 minutes took 3 hours(ridiculous) and from the Galleria to Salem another 2 hours and 45 minutes. After the Tobin I decided to use the back roads through Revere, Lynn & Swampscott but that was also gridlocked. I guess it didn't matter which way you went (in a car anyway). Next time I'm leaving (whether the workplace likes it or not)with the first falling snowflake or taking the train. The worst part was not being able to see my little ones all day (I leave very early) and coming home to find the youngest asleep and not seeing his smiling face. At least I made it home in one piece, had plenty of gas left and was able to make a stop at a rest room midway through the commute.
Karen Bouchard, Salem, MA
An hour and a half to go from Peabody to Salem. Total of 4.5 miles.
Renee, Salem
