A Winter Storm
Emily Jarmolowicz of Amesbury
The gray and overcast sky
filled with clouds that slowly roll in
to cover the sun with a dark blanket
turning noon into midnight
The whole world is silent
barren trees are lonely and desolate
not a single gust of wind to move the earth
or wake her from her winter sleep
The soft snow begins
without a sound it lands gently on the icy ground
blanketing the last leaves of the fall
with a pure white sheet
As the snow falls faster
the wind soon arrives
whispering bitter and icy words
to the unmoving, stoic trees
The blizzard reaches its apex
the howling wind and the icy snow
biting at anything in their paths
leaving mountains of snow wherever they travel
The flying snow and shrieking gale finally subside
leaving only the whisper of breeze and the soft dance of snowflakes
gently falling from the brightening sky
until even they die away
The sun suddenly breaks through the blanket of cloud
dissolving the gray blanket overhead
shining its warmth on the sparkling ocean of snow
and the old trees with their branches of ice
