Beverly man indicted in Lynn holdup

Published: March 6, 2008

BEVERLY — A Beverly man has been indicted on armed robbery charges stemming from the holdup of a Lynn bakery last month.

Prosecutors say Joseph James, 21, of 45 Roundy St. walked into Arnold's Bakery on Lewis Street on Feb. 4 and threatened the clerk and her 8-year-old daughter with a handgun.

The frightened clerk turned over about $200, and the robber took off. Lynn police spotted James within a few minutes just up the street and arrested him.

James has been held on $20,000 cash bail since the arrest.

Yesterday's indictment on two counts of armed robbery and one count of assault moves the case from Lynn District Court to Salem Superior Court, where James could face up to a life sentence if convicted of armed robbery.

He's expected to be arraigned in Salem within the next three weeks.
