BEVERLY — Firefighters made quick work of a garage fire yesterday on Lothrop Street.
Fire officials said the blaze started on the garage door near 14 Lothrop St., but firefighters stopped it from spreading inside the garage, which is being used for storage.
The garage is not attached to a particular home. Instead, a line of garages stands along the street, just down from the Stone Street (Route 127) intersection and Independence Park.
Property owner Steve Goldberg said he spotted the garage door aflame as he was driving by the structure, so he pulled into Burgess Auto next door. Staff there called 911, he said.
Deputy fire Chief William Petrosino said firefighters brought a fire hose to the door to quickly knock down the small fire.
Petrosino said the fire is not suspicious but is under investigation.
Firefighters from Engines 5 and 1, along with Ladder 1, responded. Beverly police shut down traffic to the lower part of Lothrop Street while firefighters were on scene.
