MTV takes search for 'Made' star to Peabody

PEABODY — Senior David Smith was among the first students to snag an application from Peabody High's main office for MTV's show "Made."

"I just had to run down there," the self-described MTV junkie said. "Even if I'm not watching MTV, it's on."

The popular television network will interview students tomorrow afternoon for a reality show that claims to make dreams come true.

"We're here to prove that with dedication, hard work and a little help from MTV, kids just like you can accomplish anything they set their minds to," the show's Web site says.

Peabody High is the second local school, after Beverly High, to be visited by MTV for the series. A network official said recently that only one person will be chosen from seven schools in the Northeast.

Smith said he will vie for an opportunity to be transformed into a break-dancer. The senior said he has rhythm but lacks break-dancing skill.

The senior said he's hopeful that if he's not picked this time he will land a spot on another of the network's reality shows, namely "The Real World."

Principal Edward Sapienza said yesterday the crew would interview students for about three minutes each in the school cafeteria after school tomorrow. He would be present during their stay, he said.

"They try to fulfill a dream more or less," he said. "We're going to give it a try."

Sapienza couldn't be sure how many students would be interviewed but said he imagined it would be a representative sample.
