SALEM — Downtown residents and businesses lost power for much of the morning yesterday.
A circuit breaker at a substation on Boston Street stopped working, causing approximately 600 customers to lose electricity, said National Grid spokesman David Graves.
The lights went out just before 9 a.m. yesterday, and power was restored around 10:30 a.m. after the circuit breaker was restored, Graves said.
Many downtown customers were affected, particularly in the area of Boston, Chestnut, Norman and Summer streets, Graves said.
City Hall and the City Hall Annex at 120 Washington St. lost power and phone service, harkening many employees back to an earlier time before computers and the Internet.
"It was hard to conduct business, for sure," said Jason Silva, the mayor's chief administrative aide.
