Topsfield to pick selectmen, elementary school panelist

TOPSFIELD — Voters today will settle a tough fight between four prominent residents trying to get onto the Board of Selectmen. They'll also vote on a rail trail, decide an Elementary School Committee race and write in candidates for the Planning Board.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the St. Rose Church Hall at 12 Park St.

The highest-profile race is for two selectman positions. Running are the heads of four town boards: John McArdle of the selectmen, Heidi Fox of the town hall building committee, Martha Morrison of the Planning Board and Nancy Luther of the Council on Aging.

Voters will also appoint two representatives to the Elementary School Committee, choosing from among incumbent Jeffrey Evaul and newcomers Susan Archer and Pamala Jefferys.

Two positions are open on the Planning Board, but Robert Winship is the only announced candidate, so at least one seat will have to be filled through a write-in campaign.

The last question is a nonbinding referendum asking voters whether Topsfield should create a recreational rail trail along the former railway corridor from Wenham to Boxford.
