PEABODY — Summer school isn't just for those who really need it.
This year, Higgins Middle School is offering "enrichment" classes in advanced math and creative writing, adventure days with outdoor activities, introduction to musical theater, and technology exploration for more in-depth work with software and graphic design. The courses will be available in addition to the usual slate of remedial summer classes.
"Particularly in the course of the school year, we can't always get into topics in depth," middle school Principal Melissa Matarazzo said. "Parents are often asking for what's available for our most advanced students."
The principal said that when the School Committee decided to offer summer school as self-sustaining, middle school leaders devised a schedule they hoped would draw more students.
She said the 10 summer classes are designed to appeal to students, even if they must attend to make up course work. The cost is $275 for the five-week run.
The classes, especially enrichment courses, are intended as an alternative to pricier summer camps, Matarazzo said. She hoped the courses would tap into a community need for more rigorous material in a summer setting.
Matarazzo said classes are also available for students who passed their courses but didn't pass MCAS exams.
The principal said class size will depend upon the number of students, available teachers and the type of course. She hoped to offer two sections of each class.
Courses are offered for fifth-, sixth- and seventh-graders and must have enough enrollment to meet. Registered students will receive confirmation of the class the first week of June.
Registration forms and fees are due by May 23. The classes will meet Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information, call Higgins at 978-536-4800.
