Marblehead women organize Mother's Day peace stand

MARBLEHEAD — Two Marblehead women, Nancy Long and Pat Chase, will stand for peace for the second Mother's Day in a row, and they are inviting the community to join them.

With support from the Marblehead Peace Committee, they hope to spread the message of Mother's Day as originally intended by the day's founder, Julia Ward Howe.

The ceremony will take place Sunday on Getchell's Green on Lafayette Street from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Inspired by the children's' book "The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering" by Sharon Medhi, the Marblehead segment of this global movement will include a reading of the story and a five-minute stand of "unified silence."

Last year, about 12 people attended the event on the green.

Participants will be given a copy of Julia Ward Howe's 1872 Mother's Day for Peace proclamation in which she invites all mothers to raise their children in peace with hopes that they will grow unable to act violently toward others.

"This is a way of bringing unity versus separation," Long said. "All people are invited to join to spread peace."
