Salem Mission reopens after virus scare

SALEM — The Salem Mission reopened yesterday after being closed to the public for four days following the outbreak of a serious, but short-lived virus.

For the first time since Thursday, the city's homeless shelter on Margin Street served dinner to the public last night. About 100 people eat there daily.

"The illnesses are over, and the establishment is as safe or safer than any other ..." Health Agent Joanne Scott said.

About 20 residents and staff members came down with a sudden virus on Thursday and Friday, complaining of nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Hospital tests ruled out food-borne illnesses, and health officials concluded that it was probably a norovirus, like the kind that strikes cruise ships and other large, concentrated gatherings.

"Those who were sick are better, and there are no new cases," said Mark Cote, executive director of the 34-bed Salem Mission.

Scott praised the shelter staff for its cleanup efforts, which included sanitizing all surfaces and floors, replacing or cleaning linen and bedding, and installing a hand sanitizer at the building's entrance.

"Every possible recommendation is being followed," she said. "They have really been incredibly conscientious."
