May 14, 2008 12:40 am BEVERLY — A Lynn woman underwent surgery last night following an earlier head-on crash on Essex Street. The driver, Georgia Douglas, 63, of Lynn, suffered a severe leg injury following the crash, according to police. Her passenger, Ruth Thompson, 64, also of Lynn, was listed in good condition. Both were transported to Beverly Hospital by Northeast Regional Ambulance. The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. when police say Douglas "blacked out." "She told the officer she lost her sight and crossed over the yellow line and hit another vehicle," police Lt. Tim Hegarty said. Hegarty said the woman told the officer she's a diabetic but was not sure if that's what caused her to black out. The vehicle the two Lynn women were in, a 2000 Toyota, crashed into a 2007 Lexus driven by Robin Treantos, 51, of Beverly. Treantos and her passenger, Sandra Murphy, 17, of Beverly, did not have to be taken to the hospital. Beverly Deputy fire Chief Michael Acciavatti was off-duty and working in his garage when the crash occurred. He reported the crash and checked on the occupants. Thompson was lying on the road next to her car door, and Douglas was still in the driver's seat, said Deputy Chief William Petrosino, the first to arrive on scene. While one crew from Northeast Regional Ambulance and three Beverly firefighters treated the victim on the ground, another crew from Northeast worked with police and firefighters to remove the injured driver from the car. After approximately five minutes, both women were in the back of ambulances on the way to Beverly Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, fire Capt. Peter O'Connor said in a press release. The portion of Essex Street between Meadow Road and Yankee Way was closed during the time emergency personnel worked the accident scene.
