Salem High students ace federal finance test
SALEM — Salem High students beefed up on more than English and geometry over the school year.
Students in Carol Carr's "Investing Your Money" and "Money Matters" courses at Salem High School took an exam administered by the U.S. Treasury Department — and 10 local teenagers scored in the top 25th percentile nationwide, among more than 46,000 students.
The government took note of their stellar performance and awarded them certificates of achievement.
Carr, a long-time business teacher at the high school, said the Treasury launched the first National Financial Literacy Challenge this year to encourage America's youth to learn more about personal finance, saving and investing, using credit wisely, and avoiding fraud.
Salem students Garrett Cauley, Jill Cripps, Arber Doci, Lorjan Karagjozi, Alexandra Monaco, Joe Nguyen, Nicholas Sinclair, Jacob Spector, Vanessa St. Pierre and Kristin Wyke all received certificates for scoring in the top quarter of students who took the 35-question exam.
