Dominion: Salem power plant to operate for 'years to come'
SALEM — Dominion, the owner of Salem Harbor Station, said it will meet the state's tough new pollution regulations and plans to operate in this city for "years to come."
The company made the announcement yesterday, when it met with state regulators to reveal its plans for complying with 2011 and 2012 emission standards for fossil fuel power plants. The Salem plant burns coal and oil.
Salem Harbor Station, which shut down following a November accident in which three workers were killed, was back in full operation as of yesterday, the company said.
"Salem Harbor has demonstrated that it is a viable, reliable and environmentally sound resource for meeting the growing electricity demands of the Boston area," Dominion Generation CEO Mark McGettrick said in a statement.
In an advertisement that will run tomorrow in The Salem News, the company said "we are confident that Salem Harbor can and will continue to serve you with reliable electricity for years to come."
Local environmental activists say the plant is a major polluter and have called for it to close.
