Abandoned dog gets new digs

PEABODY — A dog abandoned in a wooded area near Murdock Drive will go home with a new owner this week.

Julia Lobel, hospital manager of Borash Veterinary Clinic, said a client had been looking for a new dog and was interested in adopting the female puppy, believed to be a Manchester terrier.

The hospital manager said the dog was little thin but doing well.

"She's good," Lobel said. "She needs some training. She's very sweet."

A Murdock Drive resident found the terrier left in a crate, with no food and water, late Friday morning.

Animal Control Officer Lily Pinto said she picked up the dog and took her to the Prospect Street clinic.

Pinto said the animal was in heat, but had not recently given birth despite initial reports.

Lobel put the dog's age at under one year, although she couldn't be sure. The dog will need some house training.

"She has a puppy personality, that's for sure," she said.

The hospital manager said the clinic is increasingly seeing more abandoned pets. A number of factors, including the economy, has owners leaving their pets behind, she said.

"There's been an awful lot of that lately," Lobel said.
