PEABODY — It wouldn't be Labor Day in Peabody if members of the city's police force didn't field a baseball team to hit, field and run for a good cause.

On Monday morning at Emerson Park, the Peabody police will take on a collection of local sports celebrities, dubbed the "Northshore Oldtimers," to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. The fundraiser, in its 52nd year, is the oldest, continually running event to benefit the charity, said Detective Stephanie Lane, one of the event's organizers.

First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. Before the game at 8 a.m., Officer Mark Bettencourt — who is also Peabody High School's baseball coach — will join homegrown legend and former Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals pitcher John Tudor to conduct an instructional clinic for kids, ages 8 to 14.

Tudor will then play for the Oldtimers, along with former Red Sox pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Ex-Reds pitcher Rawly Eastwick, and retired Bruins Reggie Lemelin and Rick Middleton. Local boy Steve Lomasney, who starred in the Red Sox farm system, will be behind the plate.

Various other attractions will complement the game, including a "moon bounce" and face-painting. The USS Constitution Colorguard will perform.

"It's free for all, but donations will gratefully be accepted," Lane said.

Outback Steakhouse and Chick-fil-A are donating food for sale. Proceeds will go toward the Jimmy Fund.

There will be raffles and a silent auction. Both will include autographed memorabilia from sports stars such as former Bruin Ray Bourque, goalie Tim Thomas and Patriots running back Kevin Faulk, among others.

The police don't have a target amount they hope to raise.

"As much as we can," Lane said. "It's an excellent cause."

It's a rain-or-shine event and, fingers crossed, the forecast is favorable.

"It looks like it's going to be a great day all around," Lane said.
