PEABODY — Center School students and teachers will soon see the light.
New windows will be installed at the elementary school of 375 students within the first few weeks of class. The new sills and glass will replace plastic windows hazed over with age.
"It's going to be just fabulous," Center Principal Madeline Roy said. "It's so clouded that most rooms and offices don't have a clear view of the outside."
The $600,000 in upgrades at the school are one of many projects throughout Peabody as students begin class Tuesday. Construction crews wrapped up renovations at Peabody High this week.
"With summer break ending, Peabody's parents have the tough task of getting their children back into the daily rhythms of school life, including getting up early, going to class, and studying," said Mayor Michael Bonfanti in a press release yesterday.
"I also want parents to know that with the advancement of the renovation plan for the Higgins Middle School, the city of Peabody is working hard to continue the progress with school improvements."
Work to replace the windows will continue daily after classes are over and will cause little, if any, disruption, the principal said. Roy will send home letters to parents and neighbors about the work.
Schools Business Manager Michael Musto said Tuesday work crews will complete one to two classrooms daily over about eight weeks.
Contractors will work from 3 to 11:30 p.m., starting at the back of the building and moving to the front.
Roy is grateful to get the clear windows and ones that will actually be able to open fully.
"I'm feeling very positive about the school year," she said.
Bonfanti also asked all residents to work together to keep all children safe by taking care when walking and driving to schools.
