New club season officially underway

Labor Day is behind us, marking the official start of the club season. Here's what is going on as the new season starts:

The Peabody Historical Society's first event of the 2008-2009 season will be a potluck supper on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Smith Barn on Felton Street. Contact event co-chairwoman Maude Hernandez to let her know what you plan to bring. And save the date of Oct. 4 when the society will sponsor its 27th annual Craft Fair & Apple Bake at the Smith Barn.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sodality in Peabody will hold its first meeting of the new season on Tuesday, Sept. 9, beginning with Mass in the lower church hall at 1 p.m. A brief business meeting and refreshments will follow in the school hall.

Donations for the Haven From Hunger and loose change for the Smile Train Collection will be gratefully accepted at the meeting.

Reports are that the Sodality's Communion Breakfast, which preceded the summer break, was very successful with more than 60 in attendance. Highlighting the event was a fashion show presented by Jane Harris, manager of St. John's Thrift Shop, and a report on the Smile Train Collection by Pauline Brennan.

Peabody American Legion Post 153 will begin its 2008-2009-season on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. with the installation of officers at the VFW Hall, 20 Stevens St.

The following officers, who were elected at the May meeting. will be installed by District 8 Commander David Comeau, a member of the Topsfield Post: Post 153 commander, Donna Jansky; vice commander, Marion Rudolph; adjutant/finance, Carolyn Spencer; chaplain, Paul Gardner; sergeant at arms, Blair Schetrompf.

The new commander has also made the following appointments: Americanism, Lou Karger; public relations, Tony Juliano; membership, Marion Rudolph. Refreshments will follow the installation, and all are invited.

The Danvers Republican Town Committee will collect nonperishable food for the Danvers Food Pantry on Primary Election Day, Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Danvers High School, 64 Cabot Road. There will be a drop-off area for nonperishables in front of the entrance to the polling area. For more information, call Dan Bennett 978-774-0296.

Registration is required by Sept. 10 for Heart Screen America, sponsored by Danvers Kiwanis, to be held at Danvers High School on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Screenings will be open to students, faculty and the local community (age 6+). Screenings cost $49 for the HeartScreen Basic and $69 for the HeartScreen Plus.

The first 100 high school students to register will receive their HeartScreen Basic for $19 courtesy of the Danvers Kiwanis Club.

Typically, this test is not provided to children or covered by health insurance unless there are symptoms or a strong family history.
