The first blaze started in a detached garage on North Shore Avenue, where a homeowner had left a bag of rags from a floor refinishing job. The rags spontaneously combusted — in the same way that a Beverly mansion apparently burned — but firefighters from Engine 3 and Rescue 1 extinguished the blaze before it damaged the garage or its contents. Then firefighters were called to a very smoky fire inside the Danvers transfer station. They opened up the garage doors so they could find the fire in a trash trailer. Firefighters used a tractor to move the trailer out of the building to limit damage, then spent three to four hours fighting the blaze, Graves said. No significant damage was done in either fire and no one was injured.
