September 12, 2008 05:39 am Salem Wednesday Two dessert eateries may be gearing up for some cone-to-cone combat. Police had to respond to the newly-opened Rita's Water & Ice on the Essex Street pedestrian mall. The owner of Rita's, Cynthia Weaver, told police the owner of Maria's Sweet Something, Maria Harris, was standing in front of her store redirecting potential customers to Maria's Sweet Something on Front Street. Weaver also told police Harris was taping signs on city property, a pole, that directed customers to her store. Police continued down Essex Street and saw Harris standing in front of the Derby Square Book Store speaking with a pedestrian and directing him towards her store. Patrolman John Anderson told Harris to stay away from Rita's and not to put any more fliers on city property. Angel R. Serrano, 39, who is listed as homeless, was arrested at 6 p.m. and charged with being a fugitive from justice out of New Hampshire for drug charges. Police arrested Serrano at the Salem Mission. Thursday Terrance J. Tyler, 25, of 101 Weaver Way, Roxbury, was arrested at 3:40 a.m. and charged with malicious destruction of property and disorderly conduct following a report of a domestic disturbance on 90 Broadway. The Department of Public Works reported to police at 1:22 p.m. that two signs had been stolen from Lafayette Street in the area of Raymond Road. Jessica Ann Smith, 23, of 3114 Avalon Drive, Peabody, was arrested at 1:57 p.m. and charged with shoplifting at Harrison's Comics. Police received a report of a car break-in at 2:24 p.m. at the Salem Hospital parking lot. Peabody Wednesday A woman at 6 p.m. reported a large fight at Pierpont Park. Police officers responded and found no fight but a large group of kids playing basketball. Tyrone Odom, 20, of 74 Corbett St., Dorchester, was arrested at 6:40 p.m. and charged with shoplifting at Pac Sun at the Northshore Mall. A car parked near the Cheesecake Factory at the Northshore Mall parking lot was broken into. Police reported at 9 p.m. that a window was smashed and a GPS device was stolen. Police received a report at 9:05 p.m. of a man wearing a ski mask in the area of Eisenhower Road. Police checked the area but could not locate the person. Thursday Police received a call at 8:44 a.m. of suspicious activity at a Brentwood Drive address. The caller reported three to four teenagers in a house who are not supposed to be there. Police responded and found two of the teenagers left on foot toward Lynnfield Street. Police said the teenagers were going to school late and were hanging out at a friend's house and eating breakfast before heading off to school. Police turned the teenagers' names over to the truancy officer. An employee at White Hen Pantry reported to police at 11 a.m. that a counterfeit $50 bill was passed. Police received a report of a house break-in at a home in the 400 block of Lowell Street. The victim told police she arrived home at 1 p.m. and said it appeared someone broke in. Police checked the home and confirmed it was a past break-in between 8:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. Stolen items included jewelry valued at more than $1,500 and a laptop. Danvers Wednesday Police received a report of a shoplifting at 6:30 p.m. at Kohl's at the Liberty Tree Mall. A car parked at Homegoods on Route 1 was broken into sometime before 9:44 p.m. Beverly Wednesday Jennifer E. Clark, 21, of 201âÑ2 Webb St., Apt. 4A, Middleton, was arrested at 4 a.m. and charged with driving with a suspended license and disturbing the peace following a report of a disturbance involving a motor vehicle on Cabot Street. Police received a report 10:36 p.m. from Walgreens that a drunk man may have fallen asleep inside the store. Police said the man may have inhaled insect repellent. Police gave the man a ride home. Middleton Thursday A woman arriving to her Locust Street home at 10:30 a.m. noticed things out of place and realized her home was broken into. Patrolman Michael Lecolst said scent-tracking dogs from the Essex County Sheriff's Office responded and located some jewelry and a laptop computer in a wooded area near her home. There was no one with the retrieved items. Several items were taken by police from the home for fingerprint analysis. Police said the break-in happened sometime between 9 and 10:30 a.m.
