Town to dedicate memorial to vets of Korea, Vietnam
HAMILTON — The town's memorial to its service men and women will have a second dedication this weekend, honoring residents who enlisted from Hamilton during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
The granite monument is engraved with the names of 327 World War II veterans on the side facing Bay Road. The opposite side now includes the names of 186 Korean War vets and 222 Vietnam era vets.
The center of the monument is a golden memorial to Hamilton residents killed in action, two in Korea and two in Vietnam.
Local members of the American Legion began lobbying and raising money for the monument four years ago, and it was first dedicated in 2006. Landscaped and lined with flowers, the memorial has been an attractive addition to the grounds in front of Town Hall.
The walkway is paved with commemorative bricks for veterans with ties to Hamilton who were living elsewhere when they enrolled or were drafted into service. Bricks cost $125, which includes engraving, placement and perpetual care.
Congressman John Tierney, state Sen. Bruce Tarr and state Rep. Brad Hill are expected to attend the dedication.
Ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, rain or shine. Town Hall is at 577 Bay Road.
