Special ed workshop tomorrow will be bilingual

SALEM — Parents of students with special needs are invited to a workshop that will be offered in both English and Spanish.

The workshop, to be held tomorrow evening at Salem High School, aims to provide families with information on their rights and responsibilities concerning special education students and how to monitor and assist their children's progress in school.

"It's kind of like a basic rights workshop that is the basis for everything else," said Katerina Thompson, president of the Special Education Parent Advisory Council, which is co-hosting the workshop with the school district.

The workshop is run by the Federation for Children with Special Needs, which has presented in Salem before. The English and Spanish presentations will take place simultaneously, in separate rooms.

"This is the first time they will do it in Spanish also," Thompson said.

North Shore residents are welcome.

"We're opening it to surrounding communities because there is such a great need for resources," Thompson said, "and what to do once a child is identified with special needs."

It is the first of a series of workshops the Salem group hopes to host this year to educate parents about the issues surrounding special education.

Child care will be provided at the workshop by Community Service Learning students at the high school.
