Letter: Another great Fourth of July in Salem

To the editor:

How it's done right should be the mantra for the City of Salem's Fourth of July celebration.

Starting at 4 p.m. there were free activities for kids of all ages. Although there were large crowds, order was the key to all the successful events.

A wonderful pop concert by Sandra Lee had people dancing on the lawn, driveways and porches of surrounding homes.

Mayor Driscoll welcomed all and humbly credited city residents, businesses, donors and volunteers. She deserves much credit for the successful joining of those willing to help.

Imagine an "intermission" filled with the talented Salem State theater group performing material from "Footloose." Impressive!

The highlight of these Fourth celebrations is always the fireworks.

In Salem, the Hillyer Orchestra's pops concert accompanying these fireworks created an unforgettable evening.

The return of Dirk Hillyer and orchestra provided an opportunity for the crowd to hear soprano Laura Harbert, followed by Joe Simcox singing "Mack the Knife."

All of this talent for "free" for those sitting on blankets and snacking on sandwiches or elaborate gourmet dishes prepared by friends.

The flyover by the 104th Air National Guard was inspiring and an effective reminder of how our freedom was won and how it is now maintained.

Hats off to the City of Salem for providing us (former residents) with this remarkable opportunity to celebrate.
