Our view: More meep nuttiness

Businesses pay big money to get the amount of notice a single word and mdash; meep and mdash; has generated for Danvers High School.
The story about Principal Thomas Murray's meep ban has gained the school worldwide exposure via the Internet. It's been of great interest to free-speech advocates and Muppets fans alike and has generated a rash of Google searches and cybercomment.

Letter: Military better employed protecting our own borders

To the editor:
During the early 1980s Congress under President Clinton passed an immigration bill that for 30 years was never enforced by Republicans or Democrats.
During that same period, NAFTA was endorsed and jobs were sent overseas; Social Security was taxed for the first time; and U.S. soldiers were sent overseas to protect the peace. The country can never be repaid for the lives lost, but it should not bear the expense for those in the non-war zone.

Our view: To the victor goes the hydrant

Among the partisan battles that can roil academic institutions (like the one a few years ago that toppled Larry Summers, now Obama's top economic adviser, from the presidency of Harvard University), this one ranks among the tamest.

Jim McAllister: Region's libraries are rich in history

A recent lecture given by this columnist on libraries and literature in Essex County led to the unearthing of many interesting facts and stories about the development of public libraries in our local communities.

The decades-long effort to provide area students with a career training program that's the equal of any in the state took a giant step forward last week as the Peabody City Council formally approved the city's participation in the Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School District.

Our view: Time for voters to focus on Senate choices

Debates are one of the best ways for voters to get to know candidates for office, especially when they are not well known to the electorate.
So we commend Attorney General Martha Coakley for finally agreeing this week to participate in back-to-back televised debates next month. The first will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1, sponsored by WCVB-TV (Channel 5); and the second on Tuesday, Dec. 2, sponsored by the Globe, NECN, WBUR-FM, and WGBH-TV.

David M. Shribman: Chinese success built on solid American virtues

Barack Obama is back from Asia and his bow to the Japanese, his handshake with the tyrant from Myanmar and his difficult sessions with the Chinese. There sure has been a lot of talk about the president and his submissiveness in Asia.
