WRESTLING
Kelley Johnson was busy for the St. John's Prep wrestling team on Saturday. Not once, but twice Johnson produced win-producing pins for the Eagles in their three-victory day for St. John's.
The Eagles defeated Bridgewater-Raynham (29-28), Plymouth South (34-27), and Braintree (57-24).
Johnson, wrestling at 140 pounds, earned a pin at 1:34 against Plymouth South to clinch that victory, then followed it with a pin 54 seconds into his match against B-R to swing momentum in the Eagles' favor once and for all.
"It was a great day of wrestling. Both the Plymouth South and Bridgewater-Raynham matches came down to the final matches," St. John's (16-1) coach Manny Costa said. "They were very physical matches."
Johnson, T.J. Crabtree (125), Ryan Harding (145, and wrestled at 152 against B-R) and Mike Johnson (189) each won three matches for St. John's.
Ryan Morello (112), Alex Kwmuntis (119), Joe Kelly (135), Dan Walsh (152), Dan Marden (171) and Kevin Poplaski (285) had two wins apiece for the Eagles.
Masco shines at Belmont Invitational
As a squad, Masconomet placed eighth among 16 entries at the Belmont Invitational with five wrestlers placing. Senior Stephen Perkins was the 152 pound champion while Nate Hooper (112) and Peter Brostowin (160) were runners-up, Alex Jones (125) placed third and James Rosenthal (189) earned a fourth-place finish.
Beverly goes 2-1
Beverly was able to knock off Carver (39-27), and squeak past Foxboro (36-35), but they were unable to overcome Pembroke (50-18) in their quad meet on Saturday. Jr. Byron Lopez (152 pounds) picked up his first victory of the year over Foxboro, while the sophomore tandem of Brian Foley (125) and Alex Ortins (130) had victories against Carver and Pembroke, respectively.
BOYS HOCKEY
Danvers 4, Lynn 2
Junior winger Chris Kontos had a hat trick and center D.J. Yost assisted on all three scores as Danvers (2-7) ended a six-game losing streak Saturday. Kyle Larson also scored for the Falcons while captain Stephen Deroche had a pair of assists and goaltender Eddie Bates stopped 21 shots.
Peabody 4, Salem 1
Andrew Bucci's three-point night drove the Tanners past a scrappy Salem squad despite a masterful, 33 save performance from Cody Grondin Saturday. Derek Periera, Dave Osgood and Elijah Cohen also scored for the Tanners (6-2-0) while Matty Rodgers dished two assists.
The Witches' goal came from Mike Day with an assist to Mike Doherty. Peabody's Justin Bonia got the win in net with 16 stops.
Bishop Fenwick 4, Marian 1
Senior wing Louis Williams scored twice in the third period as Fenwick (4-2-1) stayed perfect in league action. Dale Crispin also notched two goals while Joe Cannatella dished two helpers and netminder Craig Forrest earned the win with 12 saves.
Swampscott 0, Winthrop 0
It was a pure defensive game as Swampscott (6-2-1) goalie Tyler Gallagher stopped 25 shots and Winthrop (7-0-1) netminder Pat Feeley saved 18 as both goalies recorded shut outs on the day. It was Winthrop's first non-win of the season.
Gloucester 2, Marblehead 0
The Fishermen's MacKenzie Quinn broke a scoreless tie with three minutes left in regulation, and Gloucester potted an empty-netter as the Headers (5-3-1) were looking to rally.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masco nets three point weekend
The Chieftains (4-2-1) tied Winchester, 3-3, yesterday behind a two-goal effort from Ellie Koenig. The stalemate came 24 hours after Masco thumped Cathedral, 6-0, thanks to Marissa Paci (goal, two assists) and Tori Shea (goal, two assists). Emily McIlvaine notched two assists on the same shift late in the third period.
Netminder Alex Jones made 45 saves combined, including her third shutout Saturday.
St. Mary's of Lynn 6, Arlington 1
Marblehead native Erin McAndrews scored four goals to lead St. Mary's to its seventh straight win (7-0). Swampscott's Courtney Winters also scored, while Courtney White added a goal. Michelle Macchione of Peabody had an assist for the Spartans, and senior captain Kelsey Magrane from Marblehead made 10 saves.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Cathedral 74, Peabody 62
The Tanners (3-6) put three players in double-figures in Vasilios Frangias (16 points), Ryan English (15) and Marc Linehan (13), but Cathedral caught fire from long range in the third quarter and pulled away Saturday on the road.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cushing Academy 43, Pingree 23
Katy Bricas scored 17 points for Cushing as the Penguins proved too much for Pingree (4-4). Olivia Whitney scored 10 points for the Highlanders and Julie McDonough added eight rebounds.
GIRLS INDOOR TRACK
Ipswich forces key tie in tri-meet
Senior Krista McKenzie led a sweep of the 55-meter dash for Ipswich with a personal best time of 8.03 seconds, as the Tigers defeated Lynnfield (60-26) and tied Pentucket (43-43) on Saturday. Rounding out the sweep in dash was sophomore Lydia Earley (8.09) and freshman Allie Loeb (8.17). Trailing 43-38 heading into the 4x4 relay, the foursome of freshman Sam Brown, sophomores Coley DiMaio and Maddie Duncan, and senior captain Mel McFayden, put together a time of 4:31.3 to propel the Tigers (5-0-1) to the tie. Junior Molly Miller (9.03) and sophomore Olivia Putnam (9.48) also ran personal bests in the 55-meter hurdles.
BOYS INDOOR TRACK
Prep places two at Dartmouth Invitational
St. John's Prep was a big factor in the 400 meters at the prestigious Dartmouth Invitational as Chris Crosby finished second in 51.87 and Jared Kadich placed third in 52.22.
The Eagles also had a strong fifth place finish in the 4x400 as Sean Hanlon, Alex Mostone, Crosby and Kadich did the honors.
SWIMMING
North Andover 93, Hamilton-Wenham 72
Danielle Carp (100 fly, 1:08.38) and Maya Wilson (100 back, 1:09.91) qualified for sectionals despite the Generals' loss last Friday. State qualifying winners included Devin Whear (200 IM, 2:13.07) and Annie Lindland (1:02.66, 100 back). Lindland also won the 100 fly.
Bishop Fenwick 95, St. Mary's 72
Double-winners James Black (200-IM, 100 breast) and Carling Audette (50 free, 100 free) helped the Crusaders get win number one. Lysandra Fiskatoris won the 500.
GYMNASTICS
Masco topples Danvers, Winthrop
A total of 37.1 on vault helped Masco (3-0) earn a total score of 140.7 to best Danvers (140.1) and Beverly (138.1) Saturday. Sarah Minelt scored 9.5 on floor and 9.15 on vault while Helen Steggall added 9.2 on floor and 9.1 on vault. Nate Steggall added 9.35 on vault.
Danvers junior Keerin MacLeod was first in the all-around with a 35.6. She was first on beam (9.1) and took second on both vault (9.35) and floor (9.3). Shannon Kidger was second in the all-around (35.5) with a first on floor (9.5) and a third on vault (9.3).
Beverly's Meg Harty also stood out with a 9.1 on bars, 8.5 on beam, 9.05 on vault, and 9.0 on floor.
COLLEGE HOCKEY
Trinity 4, Salem State 2
Host Trinity jumped on top 2-0 after the first period Saturday and the Vikings (6-5-1) could never climb back. Jeff Tellier and Chris MacInnis lit the lamp for SSC, while goaltender Ryan Hatch made 43 saves.
MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 77, East Nazarene 62
A late 17-4 run sent the Gulls (5-6, 1-0 TCCC) to victory in their conference opener Saturday. Chris Galbraith scored 21 points off the bench as Endicott stormed back despite trailing by five at halftime. Graham Whitelaw added 17.
Wentworth 73, Gordon 70
Despite 24 points and 12 assists from junior Aaron Trigg, Gordon (8-3) could not overcome Wentworth in overtime. The Fighting Scots led by eight points with 2:10 remaining in regulation, but watched as the Panthers rallied to tie the game. Gordon only hit one of its five field goal attempts in the extra frame.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 72, East Nazarene 48
Ashley Vitale's sizzling 8-of-10 shooting night led to 22 points and an easy win for the Gulls (9-3) Saturday. Nicole Duchesne chipped in 15 points.
Wentworth 57, Gordon 38
Gordon (1-11) managed to keep pace with Wentworth in the first half, but the Fighting Scots shot just 22 percent in the second half as they fell to the Panthers. Kirsten Vallone scored 20 points and pulled down 20 rebounds for Wentworth, while no player scored in double figures for Gordon.
