Youth roundup: YMCA Sharks strong at Winterfest Invitational

SWIMMING

The YMCA Sharks swim team turned in another strong performance at a national event recently.

The Sharks girls team placed fourth overall, combining scores from all the events of swimmers ages 12 and older, at the 2009 Maryland Winterfest Invitational.

The overall (combining girls and boys scores) place for the Sharks was 12th.

Marblehead's Megan Alexander (13-14 girls age group) and Ryan Alexander (11-12 girls) each scored in six individual events to lead the way for the Sharks.

Megan Alexander was third in the 200 free, fourth in the 500 free and 200 IM, and fifth in both the 100 fly and 100 free. She also placed 13th in the 200 breast.

Ryan Alexander, meanwhile, took first in the 50 free and 100 back, second in the 100 fly, 200 IM and 100 free, and third in the 200 free.

Beverly's Kelly O'Connor (15-18 girls) added top 10 finishes in the 200 back (3rd), 200 fly (7th), 100 back (5th), and 200 IM (9th).

On the girls side, the Sharks also got strong performances from Carolyn Hall, Keely Higgins, Riley LeBlanc, Kaitlyn O'Connor, Kristen O'Connor, India Boland, Amy Needham, Emily Needham, Toireasa Rafferty-Millett, Sophie Zmetrovich, and Erin Gard.

Ted Millett (15-18 boys, 4th in 200 breast), Kent Parsons (11-12 boys, 6th in 200 IM), and Ryan Powers (11-12 boys, 8th in 200 IM) also scored points for the boys team.

YOUTH HOCKEY

SQUIRT 1

Beverly 3, Lexington/Bedford 3

Eight-year old Mite call-ups Ryan Munzing and Tim McCarthy each played pivotal roles in the Panthers' tie. Munzing assisted on Beverly's first goal, and McCarthy scored the tying goal late in the third period. Ross Wahl and Tyler Hughey also scored for Beverly.

Goalie Kevin Morency made several saves and got lots of defensive support from Sam Cioffi, Jonathan Graham and Marc Burns.

Chelmsford 3, Beverly 2

Beverly fell behind 3-0 before it came back to make a run at Chelmsford. Ross Wahl scored with just a couple seconds to spare in the second period to get Beverly on the board, and Chad Marescalchi closed the gap with a tally of his own in the third period. The Panthers were unable to record the equalizer despite several good opportunities down the stretch.

Drew and Sam Cioffi, Marc Burns and goalie Kevin Morency played well for Beverly.

SQUIRT 2

Peabody 6, Beverly 0

Ben Cotreau, Liam Connolly, Marlee Hamor, Arieh Soferr, and Skyler Crean put pressure on the Peabody defense but were unable to crack through in the Panthers' loss. Terran Mazzaglia, Tim Casagrande, Kenny Richardson, and goalie Yegor Bublik played well for Beverly.

Newburyport 3, Beverly 0

Yegor Bublik made 15 saves for the Panthers, but they were unable to provide their goaltender with any offense in a short-handed loss to Newburyport. Terran Mazzaglia and Garrett Hughey played well defensively, while Emme Casagrande and Patric Cotreau led the offense.
