Beverly collects pair of championships

YOUTH HOCKEY

Beverly Youth Hockey collected a pair of titles recently in the 22nd Annual Larry Fournier Memorial Tournament held in Newburyport. The Mite 1 team went 2-0-2 in the tournament to win the title, while the Squirts rolled through with four straight victories.

Tim McCarthy got the Mite team off to a good start with three goals and two assists as Beverly defeated the Salem Saints, 9-4. Ryan Munzing added a pair of goals and two assists, and Emmy Casagrande pitched in two goals.

The Mites then tied Amesbury, 4-4, behind Munzing's two goals and one apiece from McCarthy and Garrett Hughey. After another tie — a 1-1 stalemate with Newburyport — Beverly met Newburyport in the championship game. Charlie Mosse played well in goal and McCarthy scored four times in the Panthers' 5-2 win. McCarthy collected the tournament MVP as a result.

The Squirts picked up wins over Triton (10-4), Newburyport (4-3), the North Shore Ice Hawks (6-0), and Triton (6-4) in the final. Ross Wahl led the offensive charge with 11 goals in four games, while Tyler Hughey pitched in nine.

The Mites also won two more games after the tournament, defeating Newton, 6-1, and Waltham, 5-2. McCarthy scored two goals and added an assist in the win over Newton, while Garrett Hughey, Munzing, Colin Desmond and Patric Cotreau lit the lamp once each.

McCarthy added three more goals against Waltham, and Jonathan Linehan scored twice.

SWIMMING

North Shore Sharks strong at age group championship

The North Shore Sharks placed several swimmers at the 12 and Under Age Group Championship Meet. Ryan Alexander was stupendous for the Sharks, taking first in the 50 free, 50 fly, 200 backstroke, 100 free, 500 free, and 200 free. She also placed second in the 100 and 200 fly, and third in the 100 IM in the 11-12 category. Shannon Quirk, Astrid Swensen, and Sophie Zmetrovich also swam well.

Emma Comrie, Kylie Cronin, Michelle Fredericks, Carolyn Soares, Reshelle Venico, and Sara Welch stood out in the 10 and Under girls category. Larsen Bidstrup, Carson Christuk, Kent Parsons and Ryan Powers swam well in the 11-12 boys, while Christopher Li and Oliver Zmetrovich stood out in the 10 and Under boys.
