As his pro baseball career continues on with each passing start, Jeff Allison has begun to show flashes of the pitcher the Florida Marlins drafted with their No. 1 pick (16th overall) in the 2003 draft.
As well as he's pitching, however, he still doesn't have any wins to show for it.
Once again, a terrific outing by Allison was wasted by his team, the Jupiter (Fla.) Hammerheads. Despite six innings of one-hit ball from Allison, the punchless Hammerheads couldn't score any runs and lost, 1-0, to the Brevard County Manatees.
The 23-year-old right-hander, who did not get saddled with the loss, walked two Manatee hitters and struck out five, facing just three over the minimum through six innings.
For the season, Allison — who has battled back from drug problems to pitch professionally this season after two years out of baseball — has a deceiving 0-4 record, but a sterling 1.88 earned run average. Through six starts covering 282/3 innings, he has allowed 19 hits and 12 runs (but only 6 earned), with 13 walks and 20 strikeouts.
Inexplicably, the Hammerheads are 1-5 when Allison starts and have been shut out twice. They have provided him a grand total of four runs.
Allison is expected to get the start on Monday when the Hammerheads hit the road to face the Tampa Yankees.
