SALEM — All-American track and field superstar Eddie Bynum of Lynn and women's basketball and tennis star Megan Cote of Fall River were awarded the Male and Female President's Cup, respectively, to highlight this year's Salem State College Athletic Awards Banquet.
Bynum, a four-time NCAA All-American, is the two-time 55 meter indoor national champion who has been called "the fastest Division 3 runner in the nation. In winning the President's Cup Award for the second straight year, Bynum is a three-time MASCAC indoor 55 meter champion, a three-time New England indoor champion, a two-time ECAC champion and was undefeated in NCAA meets in that event. He qualified for this year's New England Outdoor Championships in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as the 4x100 relay, and has served as the anchor leg on record-breaking, title-winning 4x100, 4x220 and 4x400 relay teams at Salem State.
Cote, a two-year women's tennis star and a forward on the Lady Vikings' basketball team, is the reigning MASCAC No. 1 singles flight champion. After going 12-0 on the tennis court as a rookie, she went 13-1 this past season en route to capturing her second singles title. Having gone a combined 25-1 the last two years, she also plays first singles for SSC.
The John D. Galaris Top Male and Female Student-Athlete Awards went to Marquis Victor of Lawrence and Michelle Gosselin of Underhill Center, Vt.
Victor, a tri-captain and guard for the Vikings, led his team to back-to-back MASCAC regular season titles and postseason championships. He scored 454 points in 28 games this past winter, leading the team in scoring with 16.2 points per game. A first team MASCAC all-star who also played in the New England Basketball Coaches Association Division 3 Senior All-Star Game, Victor holds a 3.14 GPA as a communications major.
Gosselin, a four-year player for the Lady Vikings and a team tri-captain this past season, finished her career as the No. 18 scorer in school history with 977 points. She ranks seventh in all-time games (109), 12 in steals (153) and led her teams to a combined mark of 83-30. She led her team to a pair of regular season and postseason MASCAC titles. Having served as President of the College's Student Athletic Advisory Council for three years, she helped coordinate many community service related events during her time at SSC. Gosselin earned her degree in sports management in three-and-a-half years, posting a 3.63 GPA.
The Viking Award, given to a student who has made significant contributions to the SSC athletic department over the past year, was awarded to Dan Riordan. He served the athletic department in terms of game day preparation and management and worked as an official timer and scoreboard operator for many sports. He was also President of SSC's Business Honor Society the last two years, was a member of the Department of Management's Curriculum Committee, a three-year member of the Student Judicial Board, a member of the Student Leader Advisory Council in the School of Business, and is a high honors student as a business management major, holding a 3.82 GPA.
