Track & Field

Former Marblehead High great Shalane Flanagan has been named USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the women's 10,000 meters with a time of 30:34.49 at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Flanagan blew away Deena Kastor's 2002 record time by 17 seconds. Flanagan, an Olympian in 2004, is also the American record holder in the 3,000 meters (indoor) and the 5,000 meters.

Handball

Ollie Cook of Beverly reached the quarterfinals of the 32nd Boston Open Handball Tournament in the Super Gold Masters Division (players 60 and older) at the Boston Athletic Club in South Boston last weekend. An attorney in Peabody, Cook lost to the No. 1 seed, Danny Martin of South Boston, in the quarterfinals, who went on to win the division. The Boston Open Tournament is sanctioned by the U.S. Handball Association and draws players from as far away as Ireland, Mexico and Canada. The Open Division have five of the top eight players in the world participating.

Baseball

Beverly Senior Babe Ruth tryouts will be held Sunday at Cooney Field in Beverly beginning at 6 p.m. All players ages 15-to-18 are invited to try out. For more information, please visit www.beverlybaseball.com or call 978-922-8655.

Peabody Legion Post 153 baseball tryouts have been rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday beginning at 3 p.m. at Peabody High School. There will also be a junior program for the first time, with players under age 17 as of Dec. 31, 2008 eligible and those under 19 eligible for the legion squad. Danvers Legion Post 180 tryouts will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Twi-Field in Danvers. Players must either be residents of Danvers or attend St. John's Prep, and must attend at least one tryout to be considered for the team. Eligibility is limited to players born on or after Jan. 1, 1989. Please call 978-774-6125 for further information.

Andrew Lessard threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the Yankees beat the Orioles, 7-0, in Peabody American Little League Majors action. Lessard helped himself with a two-run homer on offense while Ben Manoogian had two hits and a great defensive play at second base to preserve the no-hitter. Darius Boyd, Rickey Lowrey, Brandon Deberardinis, Chad Fontaine and Sam Minton also had hits for the winners. Daniel Porter pitched well for the Orioles.

Golf

The Mary Moulton/St. Mary's School in Beverly golf tournament will be held Monday, June 9 at the Beverly Golf & Tennis Club, with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. The fee is $135 per player, which includes greens fees, cart, dinner, prizes, a player gift bag and several holes-in-one. Registration for the new Northeastern Conference Youth Football League for players who formerly played in Salem Pop Warner football will be held Friday, May 13 at the Salem Moose Lodge from 6-9 p.m. For further information, please call president Brian Simard at 978-741-4360.
