BOYS LACROSSE

After a tough, emotionally-draining setback against Duxbury, the state's top ranked team, on the road last Saturday night, John Roy wondered if his St. John's Prep lacrosse team would be able to match that same intensity yesterday when they took the field against Catholic Conference rival B.C. High.

After a stagnant first half, both squads got untracked over the final two quarters — and it was the hosts who had the final say.

Mark Scalise's unassisted tally with 49 seconds to play proved to be the game-winner as St. John's knocked off B.C. High, 10-9.

Following Scalise's goal, the Eagles (11-2) won the ensuing faceoff and maintained possession the rest of the way.

"We came up big in the second half," said Roy, whose team held a 3-2 halftime lead. "It was back and forth the whole way, with neither team up by more than a goal. But we were able to get the biggest one when it counted most."

Scalise finished with three goals and one assist while John Jennings, who had given the Prep a 9-8 lead late in the fourth quarter, had a pair of scores. Garrett Campbell had two goals and an assist, Tucker Garfield also scored twice and defenseman Santo Dettore scored his first varsity goal while playing stellar in his own end along with fellow senior defenders Brogan O'Connor and John Whitney.

Hamilton-Wenham 12, Newburyport 8

Jake Cotter scored four times while adding an assist and Casey Colyer dropped in three goals as the Generals (8-4) marched to another victory. Single goals came off the sticks of Drew Erdman, Pat Ford, Ben Penta, Marcus Hanna and defenseman Dave Littlefield, who had a dominant game on defense as well.

Danvers 9, Saugus 7

Trailing 5-0 at the half, the Falcons exploded in the second half to reach the .500 mark at 6-6. Junior Mike Parisella led the way offensively with two goals and three assists. Eric Sands (2 goals, 1 assist), Steve Kontos and Ryan Burge (1 goal each) and Gene Nickerson (3 assists) all added to the scoring explosion.

Waltham 9, Peabody 3
