BOYS TENNIS

The name Otto Graham — a star with the old Cleveland Browns of the 1950s and one of the greatest all-around players in NFL history — might not mean much to today's high school athletes.

But in area tennis circles, the names of Pingree first doubles team partners Otto Aletter and Graham Swayze means one thing: winning.

Aletter and Swayze gutted out a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 victory for the decisive point as the Highlanders trumped their archrivals from Beaver Country Day, 3-2, to essentially wrap up the Eastern Independent League title.

Aletter, a senior captain, and Swayze, a junior, remained unbeaten in league play this season with their win.

"They played a great match," said Pingree coach Eric Olson, his team now 10-1 overall, 8-1 in EIL action. "To do that against our biggest rivals was terrific."

Pingree's first two singles players, Garrett Lane (6-1, 6-4) and Sam Bachelder (6-0,6 -1) also won to stay unbeaten this season. For Lane, he has now won 53 straight matches.

Peabody 4, Salem 1

The Tanners (8-4, playing a 16-match schedule) qualified for a state tourney berth and No. 3 singles Greg Doonan ran his personal record to 12-0, all straight set (24) victories. He prevailed, 6-1, 6-1. Josh Giller (6-0, 6-0) and Gabe Diamant (6-1, 6-0) gave Peabody a sweep in singles. Juan Carrasco-Pat Swift (6-3, 0-6, 6-3) saved Salem a shutout at No. 1 doubles. Andrew Hartigan-Paul Misci of Salem won No. 2 doubles (6-3, 7-5).

Beverly 3, Lynn Classical 2

The Panthers (7-5) swept the three singles for the first time this season with Trevor Harwood, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1; Greg Crane, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Jordan Hirshfield, 6-4,7-6 (7-5). The Panthers lost both doubles and the first set in second singles before making their comeback.

The Prep's John Corvi, a freshman at No. 3 singles, staged a comeback from being down 1-4 in the third set to win the deciding point, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and lift the Eagles to a 12-3 record. Corvi also fought off a match point at 4-5 and scored a break to finish off his win. James Houlden, at No. 1, also took a three setter, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-3. Another freshman, Spencer Canny, rolled, 6-2, 6-1.

The Chieftains' (9-3) got points from No. 2 singles player Trevor White (6-0, 6-4), third singles standout Steve Afrow (6-3, 0-6, 6-3), and the doubles teams composed of Jack Chandler-Jack Moriarty (6-3, 6-1) and Max Magill-Kyle Kiernan (6-2, 6-1). For Ipswich (15-7), its only point came from first singles player Matt Burke (5-7, 6-1, 6-4).
