Beverly lacrosse team make state tourney

BOYS LACROSSE

The Beverly High boys lacrosse team is a long way from its main goal of winning a state title, but at least the Panthers are going to the postseason.

Joe Reinold scored the game-winning goal with four minutes left and goalie Kevin Ranta made a spectacular save in the final seconds to preserve a 10-9 win over Marblehead yesterday. The Panthers improved to 9-7 and earned a berth in the state tourney with two regular season games remaining.

Reinold finished with three goals and two assists and Greg Pierce had a pair of goals. Dave Cheney, Ryan Nolan, Matt Kennedy and John Kleemola each had a goal.

"We set out to win the state championship and this allows us continue our quest," said Beverly coach John Pynchon. "Ranta really came up a couple of times late in the game."

Beverly can tie for the Northeastern Conference title with a home win over Peabody on Wednesday.

Peabody 9, Gloucester 4

Derek West scored four goals to power the Peabody offense and goalie Justin Famigletti stopped 21 shots and contributed an assist to backbone the defense as the Tanners clinched at least a share of the Northeastern Conference. Rich Grillo (1-1), Luke Moran (2 assists), Michael Martin, Greg Shidler, Michael Pennachio and Billy Daly also factored into the scoring for the Tanners (12-4).

Pingree 9, Bancroft 5

Sophomore Jack Williamson scored four goals, Colin Rossano had two goals and one assist, and Connor Cash contributed three assists as the Highlanders moved to 11-6. Adam Rimmer, Bobby Adam and Taylor Pirrie each had one goal for Pingree.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Swampscott 10, Gloucester 7

Kristin Santanello scored four times and Elise Giangregorio added three as the Big Blue prevailed on the road. Stephanie Lannon and Sarah Burnham each had a goal and an assist, Robin Herlihy also scored, and Casey Connelly, Zoemma Warshafsky and Suzanne Murphy all played well defensively in front of goalie Brooke Bolotin (12 saves).

BASEBALL

Pingree 11, Belmont Hill 3

Pingree scored three runs in the first inning and added five more in the second to take command early. Junior Jolmi Minaya went 2 for 2 with an RBI and four runs, while classmate Lamarre Rey added three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Ben MacLaughlin also had three hits and drove in five runs for the Highlanders (15-2).

Billy Nickerson had two hits, and senior hurler Jesse Sullivan allowed five hits and three runs in a complete-game effort. He also struck out six and walked two.

SOFTBALL

Peabody 14, Lynn English 0

Sophomore Nicole Wilson tossed a three-hitter and struck out 12 in a game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. The Tanners improved to 12-3.

Tawny Palmieri went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs, junior third baseman Esty Yanco was 2 for 3 in her first start and junior leftfielder Jamie Nocella was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Peabody finished with 12 hits. The Tanners host Lynn Classical Monday (4 p.m.) in a Northeastern Conference North showdown.

Winthrop 2, Danvers 1

Courtney Finn drove in the Vikings' winning run in the fifth inning for the Vikings. In the bottom of the fifth the Falcons had a great opportunity. Joanna Zecha singled, Ashley Burnham was intentionally walked for the second time in the game and 15th time this season, and Jaime Leonard had a bunt single to load the bases.

Alicia Dean, sister of Falcons' baseball ace Bobby Dean, worked an 0-2 count into a walk, forcing in a run, but a strikeout and groundout ended the rally. Dean also had a leadoff double in the seventh. Diana Bean (10-5) suffered the mound loss. Danvers is now 10-5, 9-4.

Pingree 19, Concord Academy 4

Kaisy Rosario was 2 for 3, scoring twice, and Dale Bishop had a single, a run and made a great play in the outfield as both seniors played their final home game in the mercy rule rout. The Highlanders (19-4) scored seven in the third and six in the fourth. The win sealed second place in the EIL. Pingree plays in the EIL playoffs today at Worcester.

Grace Steward was 2 for 3 and had two RBI and Kara Covacev was 2 for 4 with three RBI's. Kelly Marshall yielded two hits in five innings.

North Shore Tech 7, Northeast Metro 4

The Bulldogs (15-3) got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning to emerge with the win. Whitney Bell paved the way with three hits, including an RBI triple while Jillian Tentindo had two hits and an RBI and Stephanie Rudis also drove in a run.

BOYS TENNIS

Peabody 4, Lynn English 1

The NEC may need a Surprise of the Year Award for Greg Doonan, a junior at No. 3 singles who ran his perfect record to 13-0, three short of an unblemished regular season, 6-0, 6-0. Not only is he unbeaten, but he has not lost a set. It's his firstyear in the singles lineup.

The tourney-bound Tanners (9-4, four straight wins) also collects wins from Josh Giller, 6-0, 6-1; Gabe Diamant, 6-0, 6-2; and the doubles team of Andrew Hartigan-Matt Remon, 6-0, 6-0. On the season, Giller is 6-0, 6-1; Diamant, 7-1.

Swampscott 4, Saugus 1

The Big Blue didn't drop a game in doubles as the teams of Alex Hanbury-Scott Leffler at first and Sam Andler-Chris Kalpin at second each won 6-0, 6-0. Brett Jacobs added a 6-3, 6-3 singles win and Josh Ruskin won at third 6-1, 6-1 as Swampscott improved to 14-2 on the season, 12-1 in NEC action.

Danvers 3, Winthrop 2

The Falcons won both doubles matches behind Kevin McManus and Geoff Wheeler at No. 1 (6-2, 6-3) and Bob Fuller and Matt Costanza (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2. Phil Marchwinski won at first singles, 6-1, 6-3, for Danvers (6-12).

Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0

The doubles teams of Kyle Benowitz/Doug Carey and Seamus Maguire/Chris Butterfield won by identical 61, 6-0 scores to power the Magicians (13-1, 12-0 NEC). Singles wins came from Collin Hyte (6-0, 6-1), Alec Eidelman (6-1, 6-1) and Ryan Dempsey (6-3, 6-1).

GIRLS TENNIS

Swampscott 5, Saugus 0

The Big Blue hiked their record to 15-0 overall, 13-0 in the Northeastern Conference. Swampscott swept the singles Jen Cleary (6-1, 6-1), Micalla Hootstein (6-1, 6-1) and Yuliya Sergeyeva (6-2, 6-1) and the doubles with Kate Hall-Kara Gilberg (6-1, 6-0) and Jane Malinkovich-Rebecca Ruskin (6-1, 6-0).

Marblehead 3, Gloucester 0

Marblehead (9-3) got the requisite three wins needed before the rains came. Ryan Heffrin prevailed at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-3), as did the doubles teams of Shelby Carroll/Elise Hamilton (6-1, 6-1) and Jess Sokol/Lydia Smith (6-1, 6-3).

North Andover 4, Ipswich 1

Bridget Fay won at No. 3 singles for the Tigers, 7-6, 6-4. The Tigers are now 3-10.

VOLLEYBALL

Chelmsford 3, St. John's Prep 2

Luke Frick's 12 kills helped the Eagles win the fourth game to force a decisive tie-break, but the Lions prevailed 15-12 to take the match. Sean Bishop dished out 30 assists and Phil Ellison chipped in with 15 kills as Chemlsford won two straight after the Eagles won game one. The final scores were 25-23, 12-25, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15 in favor of the Lions.
