LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL
Middleton 11, Newbury-Byfield 0
Middleton picked up its second victory in the Williamsport District 15 Tournament in five years after handing Newbury-Byfield an 11-0 thrashing and eliminating them from the tournament.
Michael Manni picked up the win for Middleton, hurling a complete game shutout. Manni was on last year's squad along with Tyler Costello, Dan Dempsey, and Chris Rich.
Middleton's offense came from the long ball as Ethan Harris, RJ Libby, Dempsey, and Rich all blasted homers. Costello played a strong defensive game at shortstop and catcher. Middleton will be back in action tonight when it heads to Gloucester to play Boxford.
Gloucester National 15, Merrimac 5
After surrendering five runs in the top of the first inning the Gloucester Nationals bounced back to score 15 unanswered and win in the fourth inning. Jackson Melvin belted a walk-off grandslam in the fourth inning to give Gloucester National a 10 run lead. Michael DeCaro and Michael Viarella each pitched for the Nats who will face Gloucester American tonight in Ipswich.
AMATEUR BASEBALL
Marblehead 11, Middleton 4
Matt Temme allowed four earned runs in seven innings of work as Marblehead Legion (1-7) earned its first win of the season. John Rosenthal had three hits and three RBI for Marblehead and teammate Dan Comeau also had three hits.
Methuen 11, Peabody 3
Pat Dumas got off to a rocky start allowing five runs in the first inning as Peabody Legion dropped to 1-4. Andrew Guido had two hits and played a solid game in the outfield while teammate Tyler Hopping had a double and two runs scored.
Danvers 6, Hamilton-Wenham 2
Danvers got its first win (1-5) in the Northeast Senior Babe Ruth League as Ken Mulligan scattered six hits, struck out three and didn't allow an earned run. Jay Loehner and Corey Walker had the lone hits for Danvers.
Cam Charette struck out 13 but took the loss for Hamilton-Wenham. Carey Gallant was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Navigators 3, Manchester Silkworms 0
Jeff Tardiff pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight to backbone the Navigators in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Patrick Brady had an RBI triple in the first inning for the Navs and Mike Dowd contributed a run-scoring single in the third. Ben Waldrip scored the third run on a wild pitch.
The Navs are in first place in the Eastern Division with a 14-6 record.
